A year as a Water and Wastewater Engineering MSc student

Before coming to Cranfield, I worked for over eight years as a Civil and Water Engineer for the private and non-profit sector.
I worked in challenging contexts and, after spending five years in Haiti with the United Nations, I finally decided to go to the UK to pursue extra studies. I wanted to focus my attention on water and wastewater and Cranfield stood out by offering the MSc in Water and Wastewater.
I never regretted my decision to study at Cranfield. I chose Cranfield because of its solid reputation and unique environment. In addition to this, specific taught modules offered and the fact that Cranfield is a postgraduate-only institution influenced my final choice.
I found that the best thing here at Cranfield was the supportive environment. There are many scholarship/bursaries opportunities for international students and I received the The Lorch Foundation Bursary, which greatly supported my study. I am very grateful to the academic and administration team and my fellow students, who also encouraged me to always improve myself. In addition, student advisers always try their best to help when students face any difficulties.
Cranfield is a great community. I never felt homesick because of the vibrant international community. For example, you can really find a society that will fit your interests. I was a member of the Indonesian society and it really made me feel at home. We shared our Indonesian meals at the international food event on campus and could really enjoy the food from other countries.
The Water and Wastewater Engineering MSc focuses on a practical approach as we conducted field trips to learn directly from the industry and I have gained more in-depth knowledge by being involved in exciting group projects. As the MSc is a one year programme, I developed better time management and self-discipline.
Besides, Cranfield offers a certain level of freedom for students in choosing thesis projects that are related to topics of interest to UK water companies. In this context, I had the privilege to receive the financial support of the Andrea Wilson Memorial Bursary.
During my thesis, the interaction between my lecturers/supervisors, companies and I, was excellent and a source of personal growth. This positively impacted my productivity and the quality of my work. As a result, I wish to further explore the topics discussed in my thesis in the future.
My advice for future students is to never think it is too late to study again. Be passionate about your chosen topic. Be open-minded and opportunities will materialise. Do not be afraid to explore new fields or research areas as Cranfield University strongly prepares students for their future professional endeavours and has strong ties to the industry.
