Come for Cranfield, stay for Milton Keynes: how Bucks, Beds and the OxCam region are just getting started

25/06/2026

Heard the one about the entry-level job that needed three years of experience? Sadly we all have, and that’s why in a jobs market where practical, hands-on experience is so important, study where collaboration with industry comes as standard has never been more relevant.

Cranfield University is where academic prowess translates to industry connected innovation. Bedfordshire-based and a stone’s throw away from the city of Milton Keynes, this STEM-focused, exclusively postgraduate institution boasts a list of industry partners that reads like a who’s who of dream jobs. We partner with names like Airbus, Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Inmarsat, Pepsico, Thales, BAE Systems, Procter & Gamble, Siemens, and that’s barely scraping the surface.

Studying while also gaining industry experience gives Cranfield alumni a significant head start. It’s a primary driver for why the University reliably sits in the UK top 10 for employability.

Meet MK – where potential turns into progress

Milton Keynes, known to locals as ‘MK’, is emerging as one of the UK’s most important centres for technology, manufacturing and innovation. Sitting right in the heart of the Oxford-Cambridge (OxCam) growth corridor, the region has been highlighted by the UK government as the UK’s Silicon Valley, with £800 million in funding being invested for housing, infrastructure and workspaces to attract even more major companies to relocate or expand their respective footprints.

The OxCam region already generates an estimated £143 billion annually, and that is expected to rise by another £80 billion by 2035. With East-West Rail joining Oxford and Cambridge by way of Milton Keynes, commuting around the region is about to become significantly easier, so an educational foundation that includes the ability to get settled in the most exciting part of the UK makes more sense then ever.

All work and no play

While employment figures and investment prospects are important, a work/life balance is just as central to everyday life and wellbeing is firmly embedded into MK by design. As well as the city’s own MK City plan 2050, the UK Government has identified Milton Keynes for its New Towns Taskforce that would deliver another 40,000 homes to the area. That includes renovation of the city centre as well as expansion to the east.

There’s no shortage of entertainment, with established and popular attractions in the form of Woburn Safari Park, Centre Parcs, the MK Bowl, Willen Lake Watersports Centre, Bletchley Park and the Milton Keynes SnoZone – one of only five indoor ‘real snow’ ski slopes in the UK. The city also has large, accessible parks and more green space per person than any other urban area in the country, by a long way.

And although it’s a little further into the future, the Universal:UK theme park isn’t just going to be the largest entertainment development ever in the UK, it’ll be the largest theme park in Europe – yes, larger by ground footprint than Disneyland Paris. Not scheduled to open until 2031, but it’s going to be well worth the wait.

The city offers an appealing balance between career opportunity and quality of life for those seeking a quieter, more affordable alternative to major metropolitan centres without sacrificing career potential.

The best of both worlds

Connect the dots and it’s easy to see just how much Milton Keynes and the surrounding region has to offer. When you choose Cranfield, you’re choosing access to world-class research facilities, teaching and industry contacts, and you’re moving to a vibrant part of the country with an even brighter future – one that you can continue to shape.
