When I submitted an application to the Forensic Investigation course at Cranfield during a rare break from writing my PhD thesis last summer, I could never have anticipated that I'd find myself carrying out a research project on one of the most iconic ships in British history.

On the 9th of March 2021 a group of us from the Explosive Effects on Structures module embarked on a trip to Alford Technologies in Wells. Alford Technologies specialises in developing explosive tools to support Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Breaching/Explosive Method of Entry and Explosive Engineering communities – so a great place to partake in our first face to face practical of the year. So far that week we had learnt about how blast effects different structures and materials, and it was now time to see some of that theory in action.

My decision to study the MSc Forensic Explosive and Explosion Investigation came relatively easily. I have always had a huge fascination with Crime and Forensics. I can often be found binge watching the latest true crime documentary on Netflix, so entering a career in this field seemed like a really logical next step.
