So what is economic success? Going beyond GDP and profit
13/08/2014
Wednesday 8 October 2014, 17:00 – 20:00
Cranfield School of Management
GDP and profit are currently two main measures of economic success. They shape the way we think about the economy and business and have a deep effect on the way we behave and operate. Economic growth, measured as increase in GDP, is at the centre of public policy debates around the world. Profit is a critical measure of business performance. However, there is a tension between current economic priorities, the desire to improve living standards for all and constraints imposed on us by the natural environment.
ICAEW is embarking on a project to rethink what is meant by economic success and how it is measured both at a national and at an organisational level. To further the debate we are joining with the Centre for Business Performance at Cranfield University to discuss:
“What do we mean by economic success? What doe s a successful economy look like?”
The debate will be introduced by Richard Spencer who heads ICAEW’s sustainability team. Richard is one of the co-convenors of the Finance Innovation Lab, named by NESTA and The Observer as one of the top 50 “Britain’s New Radicals” and took the lead on setting up the Natural Capital Coalition. Before joining ICAEW, Richard was a strategy consultant in Accenture’s Natural Resources Division.
