On-demand webinar – Future of flight: hydrogen in civil aviation

On Tuesday 16 July 2024, we hosted a webinar on the theme of hydrogen in civil aviation. Hydrogen harbours huge potential for the aviation industry, with the scope to achieve global decarbonisation targets and create a sustainable future. Here at Cranfield University, we are at the forefront of hydrogen research in the UK, via the development of the first major hydrogen technology hub to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a net zero aviation fuel: the Cranfield Hydrogen Integration Incubator (CH2i).

During this expert-led webinar, we explored the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen in civil aviation, and discussed the latest thinking and research being carried out in this area. Our panel of experts covered a range of topics, including:

The panel
Professor Bobby Sethi
Professor Bobby Sethi is the Chair of the Cranfield University Hydrogen Strategy Committee. He is a Professor in Low Emissions Technologies and Combustion and the Head of the Low Emissions Technologies and Combustion Group in the Centre for Propulsion and Thermal Power Engineering.
Dr Thomas Budd
Dr Thomas Budd is an Associate Professor of Airport Decarbonisation in the Centre for Air Transport Management at Cranfield University. His main areas of teaching and research expertise include air transport environmental and sustainability planning, including the role of digital transformation and zero emissions fuels in decarbonisation and achieving net zero.
Dr Enric Grustan Gutierrez
Dr Enric Grustan Gutierrez is a Lecturer in Space Engineering in the Centre for Autonomous and Cyberphysical Systems. His research interests lay in space propulsion and microfabrication technologies.
Nicolas Capmany De Fuentes
Nicolas is a a research assistant in the Centre for Propulsion and Thermal Power Engineering. His research interests focus on furnishing the use of liquid hydrogen in aircraft fuel systems.
