A Colombian in Cranfield: My journey through aerospace materials
08/11/2024

Hi everyone! I’m Mateo Duarte Garcia, an international student from Colombia who recently completed the MSc in Aerospace Materials programme at Cranfield University. Cranfield has been a dream of mine since I started studying aeronautical engineering – it’s a world-renowned institution, and the MSc in Aerospace Materials offered the perfect chance to take my academic and professional goals to the next level.
I’m passionate about everything related to aerospace development, from aircraft design and drone manufacturing to materials research. On top of that, I’m a big advocate for STEM education and love sharing my experiences and supporting the growth of young minds interested in these fields.
Why Cranfield? Why this course?
Cranfield wasn’t just a prestigious name for me; it was a symbol of international collaboration and cutting-edge education. The programme itself was an ideal blend of academia and industry. Professors and students came from all over the world, creating a truly stimulating environment. Plus, Cranfield’s reputation as a leader in postgraduate education made it a clear choice for me to explore the vast opportunities the UK offers.
The Cranfield experience: beyond textbooks
The MSc in Aerospace Materials was an integrated programme, meaning theory and practical application went hand-in-hand. Lectures, group research projects (GRP), and individual research projects (IRP) really showcased the depth and versatility of the course. The professors and industry lecturers brought an incredible range of expertise to the table, covering everything from aerospace and sustainability to materials science.
A day in the life of a Cranfield student
A typical day at Cranfield usually began with a coffee and a chance encounter with some of the resident wildlife – squirrels, sheep, or even the occasional deer! Studying is always a big part of an MSc student’s life, but Cranfield offered a great work-life balance with tons of activities available. You could unwind by playing pool at the Cranfield Students’ Association (CSA), kick a football around, or explore the Woodland Trail and its feathered and furry residents. And on a clear night, you might even be lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights!
Continuing my journey: From MSc to PhD
Research has always been a huge passion of mine, so I’m thrilled to share that I’m currently pursuing a PhD in Manufacturing and Materials at Cranfield University. This allows me to take my individual research project (IRP) to a whole new level, further developing myself as a researcher and professional while building new experiences and meeting inspiring people.
International horizons: Studying in the UK and at Cranfield
Being an international student at Cranfield was an amazing experience. I met people from all corners of the globe, which broadened my understanding of different cultures. Cranfield itself provided incredible opportunities for professional development, research skills, and academic growth. The lectures, conferences, labs, and events all exceeded my expectations.
The UK itself is an incredible place with a rich history, beautiful cities, and fantastic people. Exploring its architecture, museums, and monuments is an unforgettable experience that truly enriches your life as a Cranfield student.
Looking ahead: Aspiring aerospace researcher
My future aspirations are all about completing my PhD, enjoying this amazing country, and continuing to learn and grow within Cranfield’s unique academic-industrial environment. I want to hone my skills and explore all that Cranfield has to offer.
Advice for Future Aerospace Enthusiasts
If you’re considering coming to Cranfield for a similar programme, I have two pieces of advice for you:
- Embrace the UK: Explore its cities, meet its people, and immerse yourself in its culture.
- Make the most of your time: Use every minute wisely, build lasting friendships, learn from the brilliant minds at Cranfield, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn and ORCID.
Hope to see you at Cranfield someday!
