Cranfield to JLR: mastering mechatronics for a dream career
26/07/2024
My name is Jerin Tom, and in 2023 I graduated from Cranfield with an MSc in Automotive Mechatronics. Originally from India, I’ve always been fascinated by the world of automobiles.
Why Cranfield and the Automotive Mechatronics MSc?
Cranfield University’s reputation for excellence in automotive and motorsport courses drew me in. The MSc in Automotive Mechatronics was the perfect fit for my aspirations. It offered a unique blend of automotive engineering and mechatronics, perfectly aligning with my career goals.
“Prior to Cranfield, I worked as an engine calibration engineer, but I felt my knowledge of automotive and control systems was limited. This course provided the perfect platform to enhance my skillset.”
The Cranfield experience
The course initially challenged me, especially due to my limited background in control systems. However, with perseverance and the support of the fantastic faculty, I gained a deep understanding of the concepts. The group project and individual thesis were definite highlights. Applying the learned knowledge in a practical setting was incredibly rewarding and solidified my understanding.
A typical day on campus revolved around attending engaging lectures (mornings were a bit of a struggle!), followed by library sessions with classmates, discussing topics and collaborating on projects. Coffee breaks at the management building were a welcome social break.
From student to mechatronics engineer
Currently, I’m thrilled to be working as a Mechatronics and Network Calibration Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The skills and knowledge gained at Cranfield, particularly my expertise in tools like MATLAB and Simulink, are invaluable assets in my role. I actively contribute to advancements in JLR’s systems, making a real impact.
Studying in the UK
Studying in the UK was an enriching experience, vastly different from my education in India. Though the one-year programme felt short (I loved being at Cranfield), the friendships I made were priceless. The social scene, from staying in hals to attending CSA parties most weekends, made my university life vibrant.
Looking ahead
I see myself firmly rooted in the automotive industry, exploring various aspects like engines, suspension, and steering systems. My long-term dream is to work for a Formula 1 team – that would be an incredible achievement!
For aspiring automotive mechatronics engineers
This field can be challenging at first, but the rewards are immense once you grasp the core concepts. Persistence and passion are key. The opportunities in automotive mechatronics are vast and exciting – go for it!
