A Deep Dive into Cranfield’s MSc in Management and Information Systems
17/09/2024
Elena Cuatrecasas Schmitz graduated with a master’s degree in Management and Information Systems in 2023. The Spanish-born student now resides in Barcelona and shares her transformative academic journey.
In 2023, I graduated with a master’s degree in Management and Information Systems from the renowned Cranfield University. Originally from Spain, I was drawn in by Cranfield’s exceptional reputation and its graduates’ remarkable achievements. The university’s emphasis on practical learning was the icing on the cake for me, as I was eager to apply my knowledge to real-world challenges.
The course itself offered a perfect blend of advanced knowledge in operations management and digital engineering. Its focus on key areas like digital transformation, operations management, supply chain, business process analysis, change management, and enterprise systems, combined with its innovative use of digital technology, aligned perfectly with my career aspirations. I was eager to complement my technical expertise with essential managerial and engagement skills.
“I pursued a degree and master’s in Industrial Engineering at UPC in Barcelona, and among the double master’s courses offered by my university, this one emerged as the most aligned with my aspirations to manage information systems and spearhead technological transformation. It is particularly well-suited for students with backgrounds in IT, computing, information systems, or engineering”
The Cranfield experience
I found the course content to be incredibly enriching. However, what I valued most was the programme’s focus on solving practical cases and using valuable tools that directly impact real-world situations. Additionally, the opportunity to participate in collaborative projects with companies allowed us to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical industry context. I also greatly appreciate the professors’ dedication to motivating and inspiring students, fostering their engagement, and creating a welcoming atmosphere on campus.
A typical day on campus started with an engaging class focused on the week’s module, followed by lunch with my international classmates. After classes ended at 4pm, I would often hit the sports facilities for squash, tennis, or a gym session. For each module, we had to complete either an assignment or an exam, which I worked on either at home or with my group mates at the library. After studying, I usually hung out with my roommates or friends from another dorm for a fun dinner.
Post-graduation and future aspirations
I am currently working as an Analyst at SDG Group, a consultancy specialising in analytics, data, and artificial intelligence, in Barcelona. My role involves leading projects with clients who seek to improve their internal processes. I am grateful for the solid foundation in project management, team communication, and data management that I gained during my studies at Cranfield.
In the future, I aspire to advance to a managerial role within a strategy department, where I can oversee a team and influence the company’s success. I am interested in both consulting firms and the industrial sector, particularly within a pharmaceutical company. I aim to enhance operational processes by implementing cutting-edge technologies and digital tools, thereby optimising internal strategies and driving organisational efficiency.
My advice for future students
For those interested in the same field, I recommend engaging in the practical sessions of the modules to gain a comprehensive understanding of system operations and information management. Additionally, I advise working extensively in teams to deepen your knowledge and collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Also, make sure to connect with new people and dive deeply into the university’s offerings, such as talks from entrepreneurs, webinars, and communication improvement meetings.
A fun fact
As a curious person with a passion for travel, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Sharjah during my thesis project. I gained insights into its Arabic history, language, religion, and culinary traditions. Beyond the academic and professional aspects, we explored the country’s significant landmarks and museums and engaged with the local people.
