Engineering a greener tomorrow: My Cranfield journey
24/01/2025

The world stands at a crossroads. Climate change and environmental degradation demand urgent action, and engineers are critical in creating sustainable solutions. My journey to Cranfield University, where I am pursuing an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering, reflects my commitment to contributing to this global imperative.
My background:
Since childhood, I have been captivated by the mechanics of machines and the innovative designs that shape our world. This fascination led me to pursue a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at Cardiff University. While there, I joined Cardiff Racing, where I contributed to designing and optimising components for our Formula Student car. This experience refined my technical expertise and emphasised the importance of collaboration and problem-solving.

I also gained professional experience during a year-long industrial placement at Bentley Motors. As a Production Engineer in the bespoke paint shop, I led a team to redesign jigs and fixtures, improving production efficiency and increasing the right-first-time rate by 3.5%. These accomplishments deepened my understanding of process optimisation and demonstrated the real-world impact of engineering innovation.
I have lived in the UK for over 6.5 years and embraced its vibrant academic and professional environment. This journey has prepared me to tackle global engineering challenges with a forward-thinking mindset.
Why Advanced Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineering holds the key to addressing global challenges. The field offers opportunities to drive positive change, from renewable energy systems to sustainable manufacturing. I chose Advanced Mechanical Engineering to deepen my expertise in renewable energy, materials innovation, and advanced manufacturing technologies. These fields align with my aspiration to design sustainable solutions that combat climate change and foster a resilient future.
Why Cranfield University?
Cranfield University’s reputation for fostering innovation and collaborating with industry leaders made it my top choice. Its focus on postgraduate studies and cutting-edge research creates an environment where students pioneer solutions to global challenges. Receiving the Course Director Merit Scholarship affirmed my commitment to excellence. Cranfield’s emphasis on practical learning and its strong ties to the engineering sector have equipped me with the tools to excel.
Life at Cranfield:
Kaizen, the philosophy of continuous improvement, has been a guiding principle throughout my academic and professional journey. During my time at Cranfield, I have embraced Kaizen by improving myself physically, mentally, and emotionally every day. This approach has helped me critically analyse and improve my work, ensuring I stay adaptable and forward-thinking in the face of challenges.
The rigorous coursework and hands-on projects have challenged me to think critically and apply my knowledge to real-world problems. One impactful project was designing a pumped hydro energy storage system, where I integrated principles from mechanical, chemical, environmental, and electrical engineering. This project underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in creating sustainable solutions.
I am also an active member of the CranSEDS team, which focuses on students and the development of space technologies. This experience has broadened my understanding of challenges and opportunities in the space sector and sharpened my leadership and technical skills for impactful contributions to engineering and sustainability.
Cranfield has been more than just an academic institution—it has been a vibrant and supportive community. The Cranfield Student Association (CSA) has been instrumental in helping me build meaningful connections and make friends from around the world. I have found a sense of belonging and camaraderie through social events, cultural celebrations, and activities. These interactions have enriched my experience and made my time here fulfilling.
Cranfield truly feels like a home away from home. It provides a supportive environment that balances academic rigour with a welcoming and nurturing community.
The need for sustainable solutions:
Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and dwindling natural resources are evidence of climate change’s effects. Engineers must develop sustainable technologies to reduce carbon footprints and promote environmental stewardship. My journey at Cranfield is driven by my belief that innovation and sustainability are essential for creating a liveable future.
Looking ahead:
As I progress in my studies, I am committed to applying my skills and knowledge to address real-world challenges. Cranfield has equipped me with advanced technical expertise and reinforced my dedication to sustainability. Whether working on renewable energy systems, sustainable manufacturing, or process optimisation, I aim to be at the forefront of engineering solutions that make a difference.
In conclusion, my time at Cranfield University has been transformative, blending rigorous academics with a mission to create sustainable change. As I look to the future, this journey has prepared me to contribute to the engineering community and tackle global challenges with determination and purpose.
