Coming to Cranfield as a local
08/08/2024

“Cranfield used to be a place I’d drive by without knowing what happens there but now it is somewhere that has significant meaning to me. During my time here, I’ve been exposed to all the exciting projects that happen, where most are key drivers in industry looking to push boundaries.” Current Advanced Mechanical Engineering MSc student Morgan, shares her experience studying at Cranfield as a local student.
From when I sat in my first lecture to walking around campus, you instantly realise people from all corners of the world and stages in life are here with you and you form a strong sense of community. Even with living with my family off-campus, I’ve found I can walk through the university and always see someone I know, feeling a part of the Cranfield community.
Being a full-time student you’re only here for a year and that year flies by fast! Before you know it you’ve completed your taught modules and group project and are fully immersed in your thesis. This is my favourite stage of the year because you get the opportunity to explore your passions as a more advanced engineer, which can open new and exciting opportunities.
For my thesis I did a techno-economic assessment of the renewable hydrogen trade to the UK, focusing on ammonia as the hydrogen carrier from Australia. I’ve found that doing this style of thesis, is pushing me out of my engineering comfort zone, and developing new skills of market analysis and financial modelling along with technology development and critical thinking. Setting me up to think more holistically, before I enter the energy industry and help combat decarbonization. With the project also being a current interest, I had the potential to get involved with the UK government with talks about the country’s ambitious 2030 hydrogen target.
You’ll find your curiosity isn’t limited to just your interests and that connecting with other students expands your understanding of how lucky you are to be at Cranfield University. An experience I wouldn’t have had without the Brian Meredith Net Zero Scholarship which is undoubtedly my greatest achievement.
I found the scholarship whilst browsing the university website and only after applying and accepting my position at Cranfield University. The scholarship meaning is incredible and Green Future Investments Ltd have a clear mission of a green future, not only that, the investment into students is also a significant sum which helps to attend Cranfield and focus on studies. I’ve also found having this achievement has solidified my ‘brand’ as an aspiring engineer who is wanting to work towards the energy transition, as the scholarship is awarded to those who have a drive to combat climate change.
By September 2024, I will be handing in my completed thesis and looking to graduate as a Cranfield University Advanced Mechanical Engineering Graduate and a Brian Meredith Net Zero Scholar, titles which I will have and be proud of for a lifetime.
