Finding part-time work whilst studying at Cranfield – is it right for you?
02/07/2026

We know that the cost of living in the UK is a real and ongoing challenge for many students. Whether you are still considering postgraduate study or already preparing for life at university, you might be wondering what the options are to earn while you study, and how to you boost your finances without compromising your academic success or wellbeing.
Your time here at Cranfield is valuable, and your focus should be on learning, developing your expertise, and preparing for your future career. Postgraduate study comes with a shift in intensity, and it’s important to maximise your ability to fully engage with your lectures, practical sessions, group work, or independent study.
It is possible to successfully manage this balance by taking on sustainable, flexible part-time work that fits around your studies. Naturally, we encourage you to be realistic with yourself about what’s feasible for you and we provide advice and guidance to that end here. If you’re an international student it’s important that you consider and take account of visa limitations.
Am I eligible to work and study at the same time?
All UK nationals from aged 16 and over are eligible to work and study at the same time. At Cranfield our policy is that students must not exceed 18 hours of paid work per week across all roles. This reflects the intensity of postgraduate study and is design to ensure you maintain a healthy work, study and social balance.
For international students it is suggested you check your study visa details and status as it can change your eligibility to earn money whilst on a student visa. You must always follow any restrictions and ensure that your work does not affect the progress on your course and that can be found on your biometric residence permit (BRP).

Starting on campus: Flexible work that fits around you
For many students, the best place to begin is on campus. At Cranfield part-time and casual roles are specifically designed to work around academic commitments.
These often include:
- Administrative or support positions
- Event and conference support
- Library, IT, or student services roles
- Research or project assistant roles (where appropriate)
Because these roles are based within the University, managers understand the academic calendar, assessment periods, and peak study times. This makes campus roles a great option for students who want a reliable income without long commutes or rigid hours.
Become a student ambassador
Our student ambassadors play a key role in welcoming prospective students into our community. This is a paid role within the University to support ongoing outreach to prospective students at events, webinars and online chat rooms.
Typically roles on the ambassador programme are recruited for once a year and all students can apply once applications open. It is a great way to not only get paid whilst flexibly managing your studies but it is also a very good way to enhance your profile and make some good networking contacts in teaching teams and beyond.
Looking off campus: Opportunities in Milton Keynes and beyond
If you are open to working off campus, there are plenty of student-friendly job opportunities in the surrounding areas, particularly Milton Keynes. Many employers actively recruit students for flexible roles in retail, hospitality, logistics, customer service, and office support.
Useful resources include:
- SaveTheStudent
A dedicated job board that draws across from all major jobs sites across the UK that focuses on student friendly jobs, - YoungCapital
A student-focused platform offering part-time, temporary, and flexible roles. You can filter by hours, location, and job type to find roles that suit your schedule, - StudentJob UK
Designed specifically for students, with roles in customer service, retail, promotions, hospitality, and office support.
When applying off campus, it’s always a good idea to be open about your study commitments—many employers are happy to accommodate timetables, particularly for postgraduate students.
Enhancing your experience
As a Cranfield student, you are naturally career-focused, industry-connected, and ambitious. As well as the financial boost, part-time work can help you:
- Develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and leadership,
- Gain UK work experience that employers actively value,
- Build professional confidence,
- Expand your professional network alongside your academic studies,
- Strengthen your CV with practical, applied experience.
Many students find that working a manageable number of hours provides structure to their week, improves time management, and offers valuable insight into professional life in the UK. It also provides purpose and something to focus on away from lectures.
One resource we regularly recommend to our student, and receive great feedback on, is The Student Room
This large online forum allows students to:
- Ask questions anonymously,
- Read honest discussions about balancing study and work,
- Learn from current Cranfield students and recent graduates,
- Explore the pros and cons of part-time work while studying.
You’ll find real insights into what has worked well for others, the challenges they’ve faced, and practical tips for maintaining a healthy balance.
Make a choice that works best for you
Everyone’s situation is different, and there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. The key is finding work that is realistic, flexible, and supportive of your academic goals.
Your education comes first, but with the right approach, part-time work can be a valuable and empowering part of your Cranfield experience, both financially and professionally.
