How do I cite… quotations from video content in the APA7 style
24/07/2025

When you quote from another source in your writing, you would traditionally include a page number in your in-text citation. But what do you do when there are no pages? How would you cite a quotation from a video or another audiovisual material, such as an audiobook, YouTube video, TED Talk, or even a television show?
The easiest way to do this is to provide a timestamp from the beginning of the quotation in place of a page number.
Examples:
To indicate that the quoted words begin at 4 min, 35 s in a video by Bailey from 2024, use the citation “(Bailey, 2024, 4:35).”
If you wish to indicate where a particular part of a video starts, such as the ‘Using quotation marks’ section in our Library video about Boolean operators (which begins at 1 min, 09 s), you would use the citation “(Cranfield University Libraries, 2025, 1:09)”.

Details on how to create references for video content can be found in our blog post how to reference a video in the APA7 style. As always, if you have any questions about referencing, we are always happy to help. Please reach out to us by email or come see us in the Library.
Please note: Cranfield supports two different referencing styles – APA7 (Author-date) and Numbered (NLM). Please make sure you use the style preferred by your supervisor or lecturer. The advice above relates only to the APA7 style. If you have any questions about referencing, please contact the Library.
