A Journey in Manufacturing: From Egypt to Cranfield
22/11/2024

Hi, my name is Karim Atteya, and I recently completed my MSc in Engineering and Management of Manufacturing Systems at Cranfield University. I’m originally from Egypt, and I chose Cranfield for its renowned reputation and practical approach to engineering education. I was particularly drawn to the programme’s comprehensive curriculum, which seamlessly blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience.
I was a perfectionist, always striving for excellence in my work. That’s why I chose Cranfield University’s MSc in Engineering and Management of Manufacturing Systems. The programme was exceptionally well-designed, covering all aspects of manufacturing management from an engineering perspective. The emphasis on case studies from the business world connected academic theory with real-world applications, making the learning experience truly immersive.
The course was divided into three distinct phases. The first four months were packed with intensive lectures from esteemed UK academics. Then, we embarked on a group project, collaborating with fellow students to address real-world industrial challenges. The final phase was dedicated to an individual research project, allowing me to delve deeper into my chosen field of study.
Living on campus provided easy access to all university facilities, creating an optimal environment for academic success. While the lecturers delivered up-to-date academic information, I quickly realised that the programme’s true value lay beyond the classroom. The course aimed to equip us with the language of industrial business, a skill that holds greater weight in the job market than traditional academic knowledge.
I plan to return to Cranfield in the future to pursue a PhD in manufacturing, but for now, I’m working for a leading food manufacturer as an Operation Manager and I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience.
For aspiring manufacturing engineers, I emphasise the importance of continuous learning. By staying updated on industry trends and thinking creatively, you can approach challenges with innovative solutions. When choosing an MSc, focus less on academic content and rankings. Cranfield’s close ties with industry organisations contribute significantly to the effectiveness of its course delivery.
