Harnessing Potential with the Commonwealth Scholarship at Cranfield University
09/10/2024
We recently caught up with Commonwealth Scholarship winners Sheilla, Romoke and Lusungu, to hear about the impact the scholarship had and also their student experience at Cranfield University.
Education has the power to transform lives and unlock one’s full potential. However, for many individuals, particularly those from developing countries, access to quality education can be a challenge due to financial limitations. Fortunately, scholarship programmes like the Commonwealth Scholarship offer a ray of hope and opportunity for talented individuals who aspire to pursue higher education and make a meaningful impact on society.
Cranfield University is one of the prestigious institutions that offer the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, which allows scholars to pursue postgraduate studies in various fields. Some of the scholars share their experiences:
“I have gained a deeper understanding of sustainability, particularly in the context of climate action through different modules undertaken during the course. I currently volunteer as the Communications/Executive Secretary for the Cranfield Green Team, where I help with sustainability initiatives on campus to support the university’s ambitious environmental targets.”
Lusungu Ngwira, Environmental Management for Business MSc
“The course provided me with a valuable opportunity to acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into sustainable water resources management practices, spanning across the UK and globally. One of the highlights were the field trips, which allowed me to witness innovative solutions to flood management firsthand. These experiences enriched my understanding and passion for water management, inspiring me to explore diverse approaches to tackling environmental challenges.”
Sheilla Constance Apio, Advanced Water Management MSc
“While I was undertaking my taught modules, it was stressful and entirely different from the education system in my country, Nigeria. Nevertheless, I was able to pass all my taught modules excellently because of the statement I kept telling myself, “Yes, you made it here because you are capable; this is an opportunity that millions of people around the world long for; be happy that you are doing something great and worth emulating even though it is tough.” This statement works for me like magic as I carry a blissful expression on my face every day on campus. I also volunteer in various leadership positions within the school, and I have built strong relationships with fellow scholars.”
Romoke Shakirah Ojo, Geographical Information MSc
Besides academics, the scholarship also offers opportunities for scholars to enhance their professional development through attending skills-based workshops, networking, and leadership opportunities. In addition, scholars also improve on their social skills by exploring the diverse UK culture. The Commonwealth scholarship is not just an academic gateway, but a transformative journey towards comprehensive personal and professional growth.
