Resource trial: Writefull
01/06/2023
Throughout June, Library Services are running a trial for Writefull which provides tools to help with academic writing.
Writefull’s support includes proofreading, spelling and grammar checking your work. It can also help you craft your sentences and paraphrase in MS Word. Additionally, it provides scientific language feedback for quicker LaTex writing and editing.
Writefull’s AI language models have been trained from millions of journal articles and so, unlike Grammarly, it is specifically intended for scientific and academic use rather than business use.
Important: The essence of postgraduate research is developing your own criticality, original thought and interpretation. Writefull should not be used to replace your original input and creativity. You still need to check any generated text for accuracy and to ensure it has correctly interpreted your meaning. Widespread use of paraphrasing, by any means, is discouraged at Cranfield University and you must always cite the original author otherwise it may result in increased matches in Turnitin.

What tools does Writefull provide?
There are four products for you to choose from and you can use as many as you wish.
Writefull for Word
This provides feedback on text written in a Word document, checking for correctness of grammar, word order, word use, style, phrasing, tone, and more. It also offers a database of authentic scientific texts, in which you can search for language patterns that you can incorporate into your own texts. It offers language feedback in two modes: Proofread and Full Edit. The Proofread mode corrects grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and style. The Full Edit mode is more advanced, providing feedback on anything that is needed to improve a sentence and enhance its fluency and readability, including word order, phrasing, clarity, brevity, tone, and more.
When you create your Writefull account please use your cranfield.ac.uk email address to ensure you get access to the trial. Please also create a new password – do not use your Cranfield password.

Writefull for Overleaf
Writefull for Overleaf provides real-time language feedback on LaTeX files in the Overleaf code editor. It checks for correctness of grammar, spelling (American or British), vocabulary, punctuation, style, word order, phrasing, clarity, and more – using Writefull’s Full Edit language models.

Writefull Revise
Writefull Revise screens texts for correctness of grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, style, word order, phrasing, clarity, and more. Students and staff can upload their texts to Revise, and download a revised version incorporating all of Writefull’s language edits in Track Changes.
Writefull Cite
Writefull Cite screens texts for citation completeness, highlighting sentences that should be supported by a reference. When Writefull identifies a sentence presenting information that needs to be backed up by a reference (and the sentence does not contain a reference yet), Writefull will suggest adding one.
Tell us what you think!
