From Pakistan to sustainable manufacturing: My Cranfield journey
10/01/2025

Hello my name is Dr Shoaib Sarfraz and my journey into the world of manufacturing began with a deep fascination for how things are made, how they can be made better, and, crucially, how they can be made sustainably. This fascination led me to pursue a PhD in Manufacturing at Cranfield University, a decision that would shape not only my career but also my life in profound ways. Originally from Pakistan, I graduated in 2021 and now reside in the United Kingdom.
Why Cranfield?
Cranfield University stood out as a beacon of excellence in aerospace and manufacturing research. Its global reputation, particularly within engineering, made it an obvious choice. I was drawn to its unique focus on applied research, a bridge connecting academia and industry. My passion for advancing manufacturing technologies aligned perfectly with Cranfield’s renowned expertise. Furthermore, my PhD scholarship programme stipulated admission to a top 50 global university, a criterion Cranfield effortlessly met. The combination of academic rigour, industry relevance, and a supportive community made Cranfield the ideal environment for my doctoral studies.
A transformative experience: Growth both inside and outside the lab
My time at Cranfield was nothing short of transformative. The structured yet flexible PhD programme allowed me to delve deep into my research while also exploring interdisciplinary collaborations. One of the highlights was the Cranfield Doctoral Network (CDN). The CDN’s workshops, networking events, and skill-development sessions proved invaluable, enhancing not only my academic profile but also my interpersonal skills. These events fostered a sense of community and provided opportunities to connect with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
A day in the life: Balancing research and community
Each day at Cranfield was a dynamic blend of productive research and engaging activities. My mornings typically involved literature reviews, data analysis, or hands-on experimentation in the lab. These sessions were often followed by meetings with my supervisor and peers, providing a platform to discuss progress, brainstorm new ideas, and refine methodologies. The afternoons were sometimes dedicated to workshops or CDN events, allowing me to hone my skills and expand my network. Evenings offered opportunities to engage with the wider Cranfield community, whether through participation in the Cranfield Islamic Society or volunteering as a mosque manager. This balanced routine nurtured holistic growth, seamlessly integrating academic achievements with personal development.
From Cranfield to Birmingham: Shaping a sustainable future
Today, I work as an MTC Manufacturing Futures Fellow at the University of Birmingham, focusing on sustainable manufacturing. My role centres on developing innovative manufacturing solutions that align with global sustainability goals, such as achieving net-zero emissions. The skills and networks I cultivated during my time at Cranfield have been absolutely instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. The rigorous research training, the exposure to industry best practices, and the connections I made have all contributed to my success in this exciting and crucial field.
A life-changing UK experience: Beyond the books
Studying in the UK, and particularly at Cranfield, was a life-changing experience. My supervisor’s advice to actively participate in conferences, seminars, and industry events proved invaluable. These experiences significantly expanded my network, boosted my confidence, and exposed me to cutting-edge developments in my field. I also benefitted immensely from Cranfield’s Careers and Employability Service, receiving tailored support for CV building, interview preparation, and career planning. Securing the Global Talent Visa, thanks to the support and guidance of my colleagues and mentors, was a significant milestone, opening doors to further opportunities within the UK.
Looking ahead: Leading the way in sustainable manufacturing
My future aspirations are focused on leading ground-breaking research in sustainable manufacturing and building a globally recognised team dedicated to this critical area. I aim to tackle pressing challenges such as reducing carbon emissions, improving resource efficiency, and fostering a circular economy within manufacturing processes. I am also deeply committed to mentoring young researchers and bridging the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that our work translates into real-world impact.
Advice for future researchers: Embrace the Cranfield experience
For those considering a career in this field, I wholeheartedly recommend Cranfield University. As the UK’s only exclusively postgraduate university, it offers an unparalleled focus on applied research, essential for addressing real-world challenges. Cranfield’s strong industry connections and hands-on approach provide exceptional opportunities for collaboration and innovation. Whether through networking events or impactful projects, the Cranfield experience will undoubtedly prepare you for both academic and industrial success.
A personal touch: Cranfield, a place of more than just learning
Cranfield University holds a truly special place in my heart, not only for its academic and professional opportunities but also for deeply personal reasons. It’s where I met my partner, and our shared journey began amidst the vibrant and collaborative atmosphere of Cranfield.
And here’s a fun fact: did you know Cranfield is the only UK university with its own airport? A perfect spot for aviation enthusiasts like my brother-in-law to enjoy! This personal connection, combined with the exceptional academic and professional opportunities, makes Cranfield an unforgettable chapter in my life.
