By studying the Maintenance Engineering and Asset Management MSc at Cranfield University, Jamilu Buhari, from Nigeria, is able to pursue a passion that aligns with his profession. He decided to choose a reputable institution like Cranfield, as he had heard about the excellent quality of education and strong industry connections, which can serve as a catalyst for career growth and personal development.
Jamilu is currently working for Shell Nigeria as a Terminal Superintendent/Maintenance Lead and is accountable for the management of the terminal maintenance organisation and its activities, including health, safety, and environment (HSE), technical, administrative, and managerial activities, to ensure safe and reliable terminal operations and to support crude oil receipt, stabilisation/ storage, and export of circa 300kbpd.
As a maintenance professional, the choice of pursuing the MSc course in Maintenance Engineering and Asset Management (MEAM) is fully aligned with his professional aspirations. The course content and lecturer profiles, with their industry experience, can provide exciting highlights and insights into the industry.
He found out about Cranfield University through some friends who are former students and via online research. Jamilu found some of the highlights of the course content interesting and testimonials from a few former students also helped his decision.
Jamilu believes the friendly environment and well-equipped facilities at Cranfield University can provide a conducive atmosphere for learning and growth. Pursuing a career in maintenance engineering can be challenging, but with the right opportunities and guidance, it can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
When we asked what a typical day looked like on campus Jamilu said:
“My typical day on campus is: attending normal classes from 9am – 5pm; preparing a meal and having dinner between 6pm to 7pm; studying between 8pm and 11pm (in the room or at the school library). I also exercise (walk) a minimum of 4 times a week (at the weekends and any two weekdays at my convenience). I like to shop at the mall in Milton Keynes every other weekend, especially on a sunny weekend day. I love it when it is a bit sunny!”
Completing a programme at Cranfield University can be a stepping stone to a successful career, with the opportunity to add value to your company and maintain relationships with industry experts. Jamliu feels like the learning is aligned with his existing employment as the group projects and assignments are industry-led.
When we asked what his experience was like Jamilu said:
“I would say very good. The environment is friendly, all the lecturers are knowledgeable and experienced in their respective areas and very friendly and accommodating; they are always eager to support students. Cranfield University is well-equipped with the required equipment, laboratories, and facilities, including sporting facilities. The staff and students are equally very friendly and supportive.”
From an institutional perspective, it’s inspiring to see the dedication and commitment of a Maintenance Lead at Shell Nigeria, pursuing an MSc programme and achieving academic success.
