New Shut up and Write sessions – Sign up now!
08/09/2025

What is Shut up and Write (SUAW), I hear you ask? SUAW provides students with an online forum to come together to complete tasks in a social environment. The Thesis Whisperer claims “Shut up and Write! turns writing from a solitary, to a social experience.”
Avoiding procrastination can be challenging. Have you found yourself finishing a packet of biscuits and putting the kettle on for the fourth time, and it is not even 9am! Then come and join us to work on your tasks in a friendly, no-pressure, focused, productive environment, meeting other students from across the different themes of the University.
How does it work?
You can choose to attend as often or as little as you like. The SUAW sessions run for two hours online through MS Teams every Monday afternoon from 2pm and every Wednesday morning from 9.30am.
Using the Pomodoro technique, there are three 30-minute focused sessions, with short breaks taking place in between during which you can chat with other students, make a hot drink, or sit in silent reflection – whatever works for you.
Whilst the sessions are titled Shut up and Write, you can work on any task. Students have written code, completed admin tasks, prepared for their panel review meetings, conducted literature searches, as well as writing.
How do I sign up?
The next iteration of Shut up and Write starts from Monday 8 September. Email Mandy Smith and she will register you. Then, whenever you wish to attend, simply join the Teams meeting that will sit in your calendar.
