Six reasons students fall in love with Cranfield University

Cranfield Boeing 737-800

If you ask a Cranfield student what makes the University special, you won’t just get the usual “great teaching” answer. You’ll hear stories about industry projects that feel like real jobs, friendships built with classmates from across the globe, and lecturers who know what actually happens outside academia because they’re living it.

We spoke to our 2025-26 student ambassadors to find out what they really love about life at Cranfield and what made them choose to study here.

Here are the six things they say make Cranfield stand out from the crowd.

1. Your lecturers probably know someone at your dream company

One thing came up again and again: Cranfield’s industry links are not just a line in a prospectus.

Students love how connected their courses feel to the real world. Guest speakers, consultancy projects, industry visits and live briefs aren’t “extra opportunities”; they are built into a learning experience and backed up with numbers that prove it. Cranfield works with around 1,500 organisations worldwide, including global businesses, governments and SMEs.

That means students regularly get hands-on experience of working on genuine industry challenges while studying. A huge confidence builder before entering the job market.

It also helps explain why Cranfield is ranked 8th in the UK for employability, with 93% of graduates in professional employment or further study within 15 months of graduating*.

For students in sectors like aerospace, motorsport, defence, sustainability and engineering, our industry relationships are a major draw. Discussions of Cranfield on sites like Reddit frequently mention our reputation with employers and strong connections to major companies.

In essence –  networking at Cranfield doesn’t feel forced, it feels like part of everyday life.

2. You won’t just sit in lectures pretending to understand spreadsheets

Our students made one thing very clear: Cranfield is hands-on.

Whether it’s live consultancy projects, industrial design challenges, practical lab work or research with real-world applications, our students consistently said they appreciated learning by doing.

That practical focus is intentional. Cranfield has built its reputation around applied teaching and industry-focused research, with many courses designed alongside employers and professional bodies.

Some students even describe their projects as feeling closer to workplace experience than university coursework.

We know that employers look for graduates who can apply knowledge in real situations. Our students told us that the practical approach helped them understand not only what they were doing, but how industries actually work, and why it matters.

Our teaching style is an element that always stands out. Our students highlight how approachable lecturers are, and how much emphasis is placed on collaboration, experimentation and solving real problems.

One student summed it up as: “You don’t just learn theory here – you learn how to use it.”

3. The support system is based on genuine connection

Our students tell us Cranfield feels different because people actually know who you are. Our ambassadors and alumni talk about how easy it is to access lecturers, course directors and support teams when they need help. Our specialist environment creates a much more personal atmosphere than many students have experienced previously or might expect from postgraduate study.

Students speak positively about:

  • Having dedicated support staff for their course
  • Easy access to academics
  • Strong well-being and student services
  • Feeling “noticed” rather than anonymous
  • Collaborative friendships within research and project groups

But support isn’t only about academics.

Students repeatedly mention the friendships they build through group work, societies, accommodation and campus events, especially within Cranfield’s international student community.

For many ambassadors, these relationships become one of the biggest highlights of their experience.

4. You’ll probably make friends from more countries than you can count

Our students don’t just study alongside people from different backgrounds – they actively work with them every day.

The University attracts students from more than 100 countries, creating what many ambassadors described as one of the most rewarding parts of studying here.

Students tell us they love hearing different perspectives during projects, discussions and problem-solving exercises. Whether debating sustainability challenges, engineering solutions or management strategies, that global mix of experience adds a completely different dimension to learning.

Outside of the classroom, it means international food nights, cultural celebrations, society events and friendships that stretch across continents.

One ambassador describes Cranfield as:

“A place where everyone brings a different perspective to the same challenge.”

That diversity doesn’t just make campus life more interesting, it reflects the reality of modern global industries.

5. We’re all about postgrad!

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people:

Cranfield is the UK’s only specialist postgraduate university. Something that our students tell us changes the atmosphere massively.

Many described the environment as focused, mature and career-driven. There’s a shared understanding that people are here because they want to specialise, progress or pivot their career.

That means:

  • Fewer distractions
  • Smaller, specialist cohorts
  • More focused academic conversations
  • Stronger professional networking
  • A collaborative rather than competitive culture

Our students appreciate being surrounded by people who are equally motivated and passionate about their subject areas. It creates a very different campus dynamic from a traditional undergraduate university. As several online discussions about Cranfield point out, our students tend to choose the University specifically for its industry reputation, specialist teaching and career outcomes.

The result? A university experience that feels intentionally built around postgraduate life.

6. Our community is your community

One of the strongest messages from ambassadors was simple:

Cranfield is way more social than people expect.

Yes, students come here to focus on their careers, but that doesn’t mean campus life disappears after lectures end.

Students highlighted:

  • Clubs and societies
  • CSA events and activities
  • International celebrations
  • Sports facilities and fitness spaces
  • Social events across campus
  • Shared accommodation communities

Many ambassadors say that the community aspect is one of the most important parts of the Cranfield experience, especially because postgraduate study can sometimes feel intense. Several students also pointed out that being in a close-knit campus environment helped people form friendships faster and feel part of something bigger.

And because Cranfield students are often navigating similar challenges such as dissertations, industry projects, career goals and life transitions, there’s a real sense of shared experience. It’s something our students have told us to talk about more. It’s that good.

And a bonus…

7. The students are the story

The rankings, facilities and industry partnerships matter, but the thing students talk about most is the people.

The classmates who become friends,
The lecturers who become mentors,
The projects that turn into career opportunities,
The community that makes Cranfield feel like home.

These are just six (seven) reasons our ambassadors say they love Cranfield, and they’re just the beginning.

If you’re looking for a postgraduate university experience that feels practical, global, supportive and genuinely connected to industry, Cranfield University might just be the perfect choice.
