Journey at Cranfield so far as a part-time student and a Brian Meredith Net Zero Scholar
19/03/2025

As a recipient of a Brian Meredith Net Zero Scholarship, my journey here as a master’s student in Environmental Management for Business has been nothing short of transformative. From the moment I stepped onto the vibrant campus, I knew I was in the right place at the right time in my life and felt a sense of belonging after very long time. I decided to pursue my studies, after 15 years as a full-time working single parent as I knew that Cranfield would shape my academic, professional, and personal growth in ways I had never imagined.
The Brian Meredith Net Zero Scholarship is not only a tremendous financial support, alleviating the burden of tuition and living expenses, but also a profound source of motivation. It reinforces my commitment and determination as I strive toward my lifelong goal of making a meaningful impact in environmental science. With a strong focus on addressing global climate change, this opportunity empowers me to develop innovative solutions, engage in ground-breaking research, and collaborate with like-minded professionals who share the same passion for sustainability and a greener future.
Structure of the course
The Environmental Management for Business master’s uniquely blends environmental science with corporate sustainability, equipping students with the expertise to drive impactful change in industries. The course is structured around real-world challenges and consists of three key stages. The first part includes eight taught modules, each followed by an assignment, which can be particularly demanding for part-time students as it requires attending university for a full week per module. In the second stage, part-time students undertake an individual dissertation instead of the group project completed by full-time students, while the final stage involves conducting a research project and completing a thesis. So far, I have completed five taught modules and am preparing for my individual dissertation.
A supportive community
Cranfield University offers a close-knit community and an interactive learning environment where academic and student support staff do their best to accommodate my unique set of requirements, enabling me to access my learning as a part-time student. With a diverse student body, interdisciplinary discussions, and strong industry connections, Cranfield provides a dynamic experience that lays a solid foundation for future success.
Life at Cranfield as a Brian Meredith Net Zero Scholarship holder has been an extraordinary journey, one filled with rigorous academic challenges, rewarding experiences, and a strong sense of purpose. The Environmental Management for Business master’s programme has provided me with the tools, confidence, and network to make a tangible impact in the sustainability sector.
For anyone considering Cranfield, specially those passionate about sustainability and business, I wholeheartedly recommend this incredible institution. It is more than just a university; it is a gateway to a future where you can make a real difference in the world. As a full-time working single parent, juggling multiple responsibilities while returning to studies after 15 years feels like spinning nine plates at once. If I can do it, I truly believe anyone can, with a bit of courage, determination, and perseverance.
