The eBook crisis and how it affects academic staff
19/04/2022

Libraries in the HE sector are facing significant issues when trying to buy eBooks. The problems with purchasing models have existed for a while but have got much worse since the pandemic, when the reliance on online resources increased.
Academic librarians, researchers, university lecturers and students are asking for the academic publishing industry to be investigated over its pricing and licensing practices regarding eBooks.
Due to UK copyright law university libraries cannot simply purchase an eBook in the way an individual can – instead we are required to purchase a version licensed specifically for university use. We have written a briefing paper to explain the main challenges we are facing.
We are asking academic staff to consider signing the open letter to add your name to those concerned about the affect current pricing models have on the quality of education and research in Britain’s universities.
Our library staff would be happy to discuss the issues further with you, if you would like more information, or even speak at the departmental meetings if appropriate.
