Cranfield University… an experience of a lifetime
16/05/2019
I moved to Cranfield in September 2018 and when I first arrived, I was extremely overwhelmed. I instantly recognised that I was surrounded by people who had so much knowledge on a topic I knew little about. However, I soon came to realise that being surrounded by such amazing people, only benefited me throughout my time at Cranfield and contributed to the incredible year I had ahead, both socially and academically. It felt different to any other university, it felt more like a community.
The campus layout seemed like a little town, rather than student accommodation and the staff make you feel very comfortable and are there for you whenever you need them. They truly made it feel like a home away from home. I could not have asked for a better environment to study what I love!
The courses at Cranfield are extremely hands on which make for a much easier transition from student life into industry. The modules allow you to learn a topic and then apply it to a real-life scenario. Most of the projects, for both the group projects and thesis projects, are sponsored by external clients, allowing you to gain real world experience in working in the industry you are learning about. I worked on projects for Natural England and Heathrow Airports Environmental team, where I developed skills in client engagement and professionalism, that weren’t really necessary as a student.
My favourite part of the course was definitely the group project. It allowed me to bond with my course mates (as well as my mentors) and lead to making friends for life. Even though the University itself is based in the UK, the student base is very culturally diverse, giving you the opportunity to learn about different countries and make friends for life all around the world!
Cranfield University’s reputation precedes itself and is well-respected in the water industry throughout the entire UK. It will always hold a special place in my heart and I am eternally grateful for the opportunities it has given me to progress in my dream career… it truly was an experience of a lifetime!
