Why I chose Cranfield at the peak of my career

Insights from Tayo George, Strategic Marketing MSc Alumni
I chose the Strategic Marketing MSc at Cranfield because I wanted a programme that combined academic rigour with practical, commercial relevance. The emphasis on applied learning, particularly finance, negotiation and data-focused modules, stood out immediately. It was clear the course was structured to prepare students for decision-making roles, not just academic understanding.
My circumstances were different from many students on the programme. I was married and had recently moved to the UK with my family, so committing to a master’s degree was a serious investment of both time and money. That meant I was very focused on what was important and the outcomes. The programme supported my positive mindset by encouraging practical thinking, prioritisation, and learning that could be directly applied to the workplace.
The modules I found most valuable were Accounting and Finance and Big Data, Insights and Analytics. These modules gave me a strong commercial foundation and the confidence to work with data in a strategic way. In my current role at British Gas, I work closely with data scientists, and the knowledge I gained during the programme has helped me interpret data, ask the right questions, and contribute meaningfully to data-driven decision-making.
It also helped me to recognise the value of my previous work experience. Rather than starting from scratch, I learned how to articulate my background in a way that clearly demonstrated the value I could bring to employers. The programme reinforced that strategic marketing is not just about theory. It is about understanding customers, financial impact, and commercial performance.
Since completing the Strategic Marketing MSc, I secured multiple interviews in the UK market through my network. I went on to take up a contract role at a university before progressing into my current position as Product and Propositions Development Lead at British Gas. The confidence, strategic mindset and practical skills I developed during the programme supported that transition.
My advice is simple. Be intentional about building relationships during the programme. The person sitting next to you today might be the one who helps you land your first job.
The Strategic Marketing MSc gave me the commercial grounding and strategic confidence to navigate a new market and progress into leadership roles. For professionals who want more than theory, it delivers practical capability that endures beyond graduation.
