Looking for case studies?
23/06/2023
Case studies are used in many business schools to study real-life business and management scenarios. They can be particularly successful in generating discussion and debate around business themes.
In the SOM library, we are often asked where to find case studies on a topic or company. A good place to start looking is actually a text book. Many authors incorporate cases to demonstrate how theory is applied in real life companies and situations but cases can also be found in other places. Read on for some ideas on where to find them…
Which are the best SOM Library resources for finding case studies?
Our key journal databases, EBSCO Business Source Complete and Proquest One Business, are both good sources for finding case studies. To restrict your search results in these resources, in the Advanced Search Options you can limit the Document Type and Publication Type to ‘Case Study’ before you run your search.
Some journals exist to make available cases for teaching purposes as well as examples for student use. The following two can be found within our eJournals collection and are also indexed on EBSCO.
Business Case journal was established by the Society for Case Research to publish cases and research related to case writing or teaching with cases.
Journal of Case Studies was set up to provide effective up to date cases in case teaching.
Where else can I look?
The Case Centre
A good place to start looking is The Case Centre. The Case Centre provides one of the largest searchable collections of business and management cases worldwide, including cases from leading organisations such as Harvard Business Publishing, Ivey Publishing, and London Business School.
If you wish to purchase individual cases you will need to create an account. There are a variety of pricing structures depending on whether you are a teacher, student or corporate client.
Cases can also be purchased directly from the issuing organisation such as Harvard Business School.
Other sources
There are a number of websites which provide free access to case studies for use in teaching and learning:
- MIT Sloan’s Teaching Resources Library website brings together a collection of cases to be used for teaching. Once registered on the site, you will have access to case studies and videos on entrepreneurship, leadership and ethics, operations management, strategy and sustainability.
- MERLOT OER Case studies are provided by a cooperative of United States universities set up to share and peer review digital learning materials
Other free sources for case studies include:
- Business in the Community (BITC) provides case studies showing where businesses gain benefits from creating a positive impact.
- Innovation Case Studies – case studies from the Defence and Security Accelerator program of the UK government.
- 15 HR analytics Case Studies – case studies showing HR impact on business
- plus many other organisations sites…
