Get a head start on referencing and plagiarism
16/10/2024
We offer a module on Referencing And Avoiding Plagiarism which you can find on your Canvas dashboard.
It explains the role and importance of citing references and how to incorporate the work of other authors into your own work without plagiarising. Specifically, it aims to help you understand:
- Plagiarism: what it is and why you need to be aware of it
- The importance of correctly citing the work of other authors
- How to incorporate in-text citations into your work
- Quoting, using other people’s words
- Summarising, using your own words, concisely
- Paraphrasing, using your own words, in more depth
- How to create and properly format your bibliographic references
We support two different referencing styles at Cranfield – the Author-Date style (APA7) and the Numbered style (NLM). Please check with your lecturer or supervisor before you start collating your references for your first assignment, as they may have a preference for which system you use.
Please also ensure you complete the correct Referencing and Avoiding Plagiarism module for your course. If you can see more than one tile on your dashboard, ask your Librarian if you are in any doubt.
The completion of the module is compulsory for taught students and highly recommended for research students. We suggest you do this before your first assignment to ensure your academic success.
You can find out more about academic integrity, how to avoid academic misconduct and the support available to you throughout your studies by watching this recorded webinar hosted from our on-campus studio with our Pro-Vice Chancellor, Education, Professor Sean Tyrrel.
