HiPPOs, are not an endangered species. What are HiPPOs? They are the Highest Paid Person’s Opinion. This was a term coined yesterday at the effective performance measurement and management workshop in London by Gillian Porter, Head of Performance and Analysis at Durham Constabulary.
HiPPOs may be right, their experience and gut feel may be correct, but what if they are wrong and don’t really understand the true drivers of performance in your organisation? That can be a disaster. Senior management have the job of making key decisions but that should be after careful consideration of the data. All opinion should be challenged by data and evidence, so beware of HiPPOs and the damage they can cause.
